CRPD CITIZENS POLICE ACADEMY The news today is that last Tuesday evening I and about a dozen other men and women graduated from the CRPD Citizens Police Academy. Let me tell you folks, you have a great bunch of folks down there at the CRPD working to keep Cedar Rapids safe. This $30.00, ten week course gives you first hand experience on how our CRPD handles law enforcement in our community.
The program is run by Sgt. Christy Hamblin, and meets once a week for 3 hours and covers essentially every aspect of law enforcement that the CRPD is involved with. Topics include, History and Organization of the CRPD, Field Operations, Crime Prevention, CRPD tour, Use of Force and Defensive Tactics, Special Response Team, Firearms, Investigations, Crime Analysis, Internal Affairs, Defensive Driving, K-9 Unit, Jail tour and more.
This course is not just classroom presentations which are very interesting and informative, but there is lots of hands on experience as well. Each student gets to: spend an evening with a police officer on patrol; spend an evening with the awsome team up in the Command Center (Dispatch) listening to all the incoming calls and interaction with the patrol officers; shooting a Glock pistol and an M4 Rifle on the shooting range; and driving a police squad car at Hawkeye Downs through an obstacle course.
The course is both informative and fun for the citizens but what's in it for the police department?
By the time the course is complete, each student becomes an ambassador for the men and women who protect our community. When you spend a night with a police officer or at the Command Center you realize that you and all the other citizens get to sleep well every night because our CRPD is on the job keeping the bad guys at bay. Many graduates feel motivated to volunteer as a Reserve Police Officer or one of the volunteer core to maintain a connection with the law enforcement culture and community.
Personally, I can't think of a better way to generate community support for our law enforcement than continuing to offer this program. If anyone is interested, call Sgt. Hamblin at 319-286-5439 and sign up for the next class. You better hurry though because the Spring class is already half full! Good luck!
