ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES STEALING FROM YOU?
April 2, 2015
Employers are generally trusting of their employees. Otherwise, the employee wouldn’t have been hired in the first place. But people’s needs change over time and harsh circumstances can turn an otherwise honest person to rationalize behavior that he wouldn’t normally consider. Maybe it’s a sudden need for extra cash to pay medical bills. A common reason for theft is to finance a person’s drug habit. Or perhaps it’s a seasonal change, like Christmas, when a parent becomes desperate to provide gifts for their children. If you are an employer, here are some things to look out for to clue you in on potential theft: 1. Some merchandise can be disguised as trash and be retrieved from the outside bin after hours. 2. Small items can be hidden in clothing or purses that are unchecked, similar to a shop lifter. 3. Watch out for employees who habitually park near loading docks and have easy access to shipments coming or going. 4. Control access points. Keep an eye open for employees conspiring to gain access to areas where they don’t belong. 5. A loaded truck parked outside is a prime target for theft. 6. Beware of merchandise that may be intentionally damaged to obtain employee discounts. 7. Be aware that an employee may conspire with a customer for a refund or outright theft. 8. Be aware of possible collusion between company employees and company (or outside) truck drivers 9. Be aware that shipping clerks may misdirect products to accomplices or to their own post office boxes. Many large businesses have Loss Prevention personnel. But smaller companies and occasionally bigger businesses may choose to hire a PI for surveillance or as an undercover investigator.
